. relief: it increases in height from south to north, like a natural amphitheatre, structured on three levels, with a great variety determined by the geographical situation: the Gavanu-Burdea Plain (150 m); the Getic Plateau and Sub-Carpathians, with vineyards and orchards; the Fagaras Mountains (with Moldoveanu peak 2,544 m-the highest in the country and Negoiu peak, 2535 m, the Iezer-Papusa massif, Leaota, Piatra Craiului massifs, Rucar-Bran Corridor);
. climate: it is temperate-continental, varying according to the geographical structure, the air temperature is not uniform;
. watercourses: the main collecting river is Arges and some of its tributaries are: Valsan, Râul Doamnei, Raul Targului, Bratia, Bughea, Rancaciov, Carcinov, many rivers have the springs in the region with hills: Vedea, Cotmeana, Teleorman, Neajlov.
TOURISTIC SIGHTS MOUNTAINS
. The Piatra Craiului Mountains-a high and "sharp limestone blade", they belong to Arges county in their southern part. A paradise for climbers, the massif offers tourist routes along and across the slopes or on the famous narrow ridge. This area has a rich and varied vegetation, with rare species like: the garden pink Piatra Craiului, the edelweiss, the bloody twing. Consequently, a part of these mountains was declared natural preserve;
. The Fagaras Mountains-the highest mountain ridge of the entire Romanian Carpathians, with the highest altitudes of our country (Moldoveanu peak-2544 m and Negoiu Peak-2535 m). These heights have determined French geographer Em. de Martonne to call the Southern Carpathians "The Transylvanian Alps". The rivers, rich and numerous, rush down from high altitude springs or glacial lakes, cutting deep valleys with many waterfalls and rapids. The mountains are crossed by the Transfagarasan road, situated at the highest crossing altitude of the Carpathians, 2055 m, with an 845 m tunnel. A great portion of this road crosses the alpine regions, offering an incredible view;
. The Iezer-Papusa Mountains-with their peaks (Iezerul Mare-2462 m) they dominate in the south the Sub-Carpathic Depression of Câmpulung. The specific geographical structure, with avalanche corridors, glacier terrains and valleys, detritus, stone torrents, glacier tables, all turn this massif into an attraction point for many tourists. The Iezer preserve was founded here because of its valuable features.
VALLEYS AND GORGES
. The Valley and the Gorges of Dambovita-they are partly responsible for the picturesque landscape of the Rucar-Dambovicioara area. Cutting through successive lines of gorges, the restless streams of the valley shape vertical walls. The rich vegetation, the sparkling cold waters, the fact that part of the gorges (The Gorges of Cetateni) have been declared a natural preserve, the Dambovicioara Cave (30 km away from Campulung, easy to reach) enhance the emotions of a trip through this valley;
. The Arges Gorges;
. The Valley and Gorges of Topolog;
. The Valsan Valley-fauna preserve, with the rarest fish in Romania: the freshwater fish (asprete).
LAKES
. The Vidraru Lake-accumulating lake with the impressive dam belonging to the Arges hydro-electric power station ("light citadel"), it stretches between the stone walls of the gorge, the lake leads your eyes into the dazzling man-made abyss (166 m height). Downstream of Vidraru a series of lakes have been built, together with small power stations: Onesti, Cerbureni, Curtea de Arges, Zigoneni, Bascov, Stefanesti.
PRESERVES AND MONUMENTS OF NATURE
. Albesti-(9 km north-west of Campulung), there are two geological preserves: one is represented by the Albesti granite (with blocks of various sizes), used in the construction of the Bucharest Triumphal Arch, of the Curtea de Arges Monastery, the other one includes the Albesti limestones;
. Mihailesti-(21 km south of Campulung), forest preserve with local and exotic species (Caucasus firtree, douglas, life tree, Virginia juniper tree, Turkestan elm, tulip tree) impressive by heights and diameters;
. Suslanesti-(6 km away from Campulung), world famous paleontologic preserve due to the discoveries of mumified fossil fish and impressions of some species of trees in the bituminous shale;
. Negrasi-botanical preserve: glade of daffodils in bloom from May to July.
SPAS
. Badesti-(at an altitude of 170 m, 60 km away from Pitesti), permanent spa, with modern treatment facilities: for warm mineral water baths; thermal mineral water pools (also for kinetotherapy); devices for electrotherapy. Access: by train (Stolnici railway station, on Bucuresti- Pitesti- Piatra Olt line), by road (DN65-E 94-from Bucharest or Pitesti);
. Bradetu-(at an altitude of 628 m, 28 km away from Curtea de Argea and 58 km away from Pitesti), a spa of local interest, with a climate of mountain depression, a alpine breeze being felt here in summer.
HISTORICAL VESTIGES
. Fortress-Jidava, 4 km away from Campulung, a strong Roman fortress built during the times of the emperors Commodus and Septimus Severus (193-211), with a surface of 10,000 square m, it is one of the best preserved fortresses in Romania;
. The Ruling Court-Curtea de Arges, historical monument built in the 13th century, today in ruins, it was the first capital of the rulers of Wallachia, preserves the architecture of the folk architectural tradition being built in river stones;
. Fortress-Poienari, 2 km away from Capatanenii Pamanteni on DN 7C, it was built in the 14th century on the Cetatuia Mountain by Vlad the Impaler;
. The Geto-Dacian Fortress-Cetateni, (3rd century B.C.), 26 km away from Campulung, it played an important role in the development of the first Dacian state led by Burebista;
